history

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ at Kadashi is located opposite the southern wall of the Kremlin , on the opposite bank of the Moscow River and the water bypass canal . The village of Kadaschowo had been there since the beginning of the 16th century, where craftsmen lived from making barrels (Russian: Kadaschi ). At least since 1493 there was a wooden church dedicated to the resurrection of Jesus Christ . In 1657 the first stone church was built. In 1687 construction began on the present church, which was completed in 1695. The old church was demolished, with the exception of individual components that were integrated into the new church building.

In 1812, during the French invasion , the Church of the Resurrection of Christ was damaged, looted and used as a horse stable. A restoration followed until 1849. In the 1860s the interior was reconstructed. The church was closed for services under Soviet rule in 1934 and the building was used by various organizations. Most of the priests of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ were killed in 1937. The bells were dismantled and some of them were taken to the Bolshoi Theater , where they are still in use today. From 1946 to 1966, the well-known restorer GW Alfyorova undertook a restoration. In 1964 the church building was handed over to the Restoration Center by Igor Emmanuilowitsch Grabar .

In 1992 the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Kadaschi was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church . However, the restoration center refused to stop the work until 2004. Eventually the restorers were evicted by parishioners. Another conflict arose in 2010 because of the government's intention to build a residential area in Moscow's church cemetery. This conflict was called the "Battle for Kadashi" and received a lot of media attention. Finally the decision to build the residential area was canceled. A new restoration followed in 2015-2017.
