Christian Althaus

Christian Lorenz Althaus is a Swiss epidemiologist from the University of Bern . Among other things, he deals with emerging infectious diseases and the mathematical modeling of such diseases .

Life

After a degree in biology and a brief position as a research assistant at the ETH Zurich , Christian Althaus studied theoretical biology and bioinformatics at the University of Utrecht from 2005 to 2009 . Since 2009 he has been working at the Institute for Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Bern, currently as Head of Research Group. In 2017 he completed his habilitation at the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern.

COVID-19 pandemic

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , Althaus also gained great popularity outside of academic institutions. He publicly advocates drastic measures, citing South Korea and Singapore as role models. Due to the pandemic, he sees Switzerland in the "greatest health emergency in its recent history". In the initial phase of the pandemic, he accused the Federal Office of Public Health of underestimating the danger of the coronavirus .
