Christian Lessmann

Christian Leßmann (* 19th November 1977 ) is a German economist with the research priorities Development Economics and Regional Economics . In addition to his main activity as head of the Institute for Economics at the Technical University of Braunschweig , he is a research professor at the Ifo Institute - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research at the University of Munich eV - and CESifo Research Network Affiliate.

Life

Christian Leßmann studied economics from 1998 to 2004 at the Leibniz University of Hanover . He then worked from 2004 to 2007 as a research assistant at the Ifo Institute Dresden branch. From 2007 to 2013 he worked at the Chair of Finance at the Technical University of Dresden , where he received his doctorate in 2010 and habilitation in 2014. From 2013 to 2014 he was Professor of Economics at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 2014, Leßmann was offered a position at the Technical University of Braunschweig. Since 2017 he has been spokesman for the Department of Economics there. In addition, Leßmann has been a member of the regional economic committee of the Verein für Socialpolitik since 2017 .

According to the Handelsblatt “VWL Rankings 2017 - Researchers under 40”, Christian Leßmann ranks 61st among the top 100 economists with the most research in German-speaking countries.

He is largely concerned with the investigation of regional inequalities, economic convergence of states and their determinants. The analysis of the influence of federal structures and the unequal allocation of resources on the development of economies and national-internal tensions (such as civil wars) are also on his agenda.

The above questions are currently being researched as part of a DFG project based on satellite night-light images in cooperation with the Leibniz University of Hanover and the University of Hamburg .

  • 2011 Dr. Feldbausch sponsorship award for completed outstanding dissertations at the Faculty of Economics at the TU Dresden

  • 2012 Wolfgang Ritter Prize from the Wolfgang Ritter Foundation
