The Christian Development Service (CED) is a non-profit, non-denominational, non-governmental organization based in Munich. The foundation was founded in 1992 by the tropical doctor Susanne Pechel and supports aid projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe.

The funding priorities include the construction of poor houses, hospital wards, schools, training centers, wells and irrigation systems, homes for the disabled as well as development aid work in the context of homeless aid, health education, food aid, school education and HIV / AIDS aid.

Main focus of work and projects

The organization supports 12 aid projects in different regions of India, Tanzania, Ghana, Peru and Bulgaria. Around half a million people will be reached through this. His funding priorities are:

  • Medical aid: Construction and operation of hospitals, homes for the disabled and HIV / AIDS wards as well as the provision of basic medical care
  • Training aid: construction and operation of schools and training centers as well as school sponsorships for orphans and children from low-income families
  • Homeless assistance: construction and maintenance of poor and homeless facilities
  • Food aid: Construction and operation of soup kitchens for street children, the elderly, the sick and the homeless, as well as food supply in drought areas
  • Construction and development aid: construction of village structures through the construction of schools and community centers, construction of wells and agricultural irrigation systems, grain silos, etc.

The basic principles of project work are transparency and personal contact with all aid projects.

The foundation works with locally based project partners such as Christian partner organizations and religious orders who support people in need regardless of race, caste and religion through humanitarian services. The project partners usually receive no or only insufficient support from the state and church and are therefore completely dependent on private donations. Volunteers, so-called CED helpers (syn. "CED'ler"), visit the funded aid projects regularly and at their own expense in order to get an idea of the situation on site. As the “mouthpiece of the poor”, they provide first-hand information to donors around them after their return to Germany. The visit of the helpers also creates personal cooperation with the needy and project partners and creates common opportunities for relief measures.

Organization and structure

The members of the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees as well as the founder work on a voluntary basis and waive any expense allowances. In addition, all helpers of the CED are also volunteers. The groups of helpers, which are located in Germany (9 districts) and Bulgaria (1 district), are made up of people of different age groups and professions. Through charity campaigns and fundraising, they support the financing of the CED aid projects and at the same time are in direct contact with donors in Germany. Long-term CED helpers visit the aid projects regularly and at their own expense. The organization currently has around 2,000 active sponsors and 200 volunteer helpers across Germany, including many schools, parishes and individuals. Since the volunteers can only work in addition to their jobs in their free time, the CED is reinforced by full-time part-time workers.
Since its establishment, the foundation has been provided with the premises for its activities (office, storage room, events) free of charge by the pastor and the St. Joseph Church Foundation in Munich-Maxvorstadt. The former Bavarian Capuchins (now German Capuchins ) have supported the foundation since the beginning by housing and providing the premises in the former Capuchin parish of St. Joseph in Munich, as well as by supporting donation and collection campaigns. The charisma of the Capuchins through closeness to people, especially the poor, the weak and the sick, has decisively shaped the foundation in its development.

Mission statement

The CED helpers should take into account the following guiding principles: To respect human dignity (1), to act as a community in the entirety of the aid provided, in order to be able to achieve more through the various skills and possibilities (2), to respond to existential ones with concrete aid measures To accept the needs of fellow human beings in poor countries and to work for social justice (according to Mt. 25; 35-41) (3), to pass on the invitation to "help each other" and thereby to live the principle of the many small helps that are given to many Giving help to small places in the world and enabling change for the better (4), cultivating personal contact with donors, needy people and project partners in order to build personal bridges of sympathy between donors and the poor and to enable transparency of the aid provided (5), Careful and conscientious handling of the finances (6), as well as the Christian faith through lived example give (7). The foundation underscores its Christian identity in its mission statement, but also emphasizes that the local partner organizations act independently of their religious affiliation, both with the aid recipients and with the local staff. In Tanzania and India, for example, non-Christians and Muslim personnel are deployed as well as being dealt with in the cultural context of the project countries. The religious affiliation of the aid recipients does not play a role in any of the CED aid projects.

Legal form and financing

The CED is recognized as a non-profit foundation under public law and is entitled to issue donation receipts. The foundation is controlled by the foundation supervision of the government of Upper Bavaria and an independent auditor. It is 100 percent financially supported by around 2,000 donors and receives neither government nor church subsidies. The foundation's current assets amounted to around 500,000 euros in 2013.
