Christoph Imboden

Christoph Niklaus Imboden (born April 28, 1946 in Zurich ) is a British - Swiss ornithologist , ecologist and nature conservationist.

Life

After his promotion to Ph.D. in the fields of zoology and ecology at the University of Basel in 1972, Imboden moved the following year to the New Zealand Wildlife Service , where he worked as a senior scientist in the Fauna Survey Unit until 1974. From 1977 to 1979 he held the post of assistant director there. From 1975 to 1976 he was nature conservation officer at the World Wildlife Fund . In 1980 Imboden was elected the first General Director of the International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP), an office he held until 1996. During his tenure, a new professional structure was set up with the support of WWF, among other things, which made it possible to set up numerous offices on four continents. In 1985 the ICBP was already active in over 200 nature conservation projects in 42 countries. In 1994 the company was renamed BirdLife International , where Imboden has been an independent consultant since 1996. From 2002 to 2003 he was managing director of WWF Switzerland .

Awards

In 1993 he received the Nature Conservation Medal of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and in the same year the Premio Gaia in Sicily. In 1996 he was awarded the Order of the Golden Ark by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands . In 2000 he was awarded the President's Medal by BirdLife International. In 2008 he received the IUCN's Peter Scott Memorial Award .
