Christoph Motschmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christoph Motschmann was the inventor and manufacturer of a mechanical speaking device for the doll industry in Thuringia in the 19th century, based in Sonneberg .

history

According to Jürgen and Marianne Cieslik, the editors of Cieslik's Lexicon of the German Doll Industry ... Christoph Motschmann was one of the first to receive a patent for the manufacture of a speaking mechanism, “[...] which was mass-produced at the lowest possible cost and in the doll's body could be used ".

A stamp applied to the speaking dolls consisted of two parallel ovals in which the words “PATENT 29 APRIL / 1857 / CH. MOTSCHMANN / SONNEBERG ”were inserted. The patent was valid from 1857 to 1859; During this time the stamp was also put on corresponding dolls. However, so far there has been no evidence that Motschmann himself was a manufacturer of such dolls.

Many manufacturers were soon producing dolls with and without Motschmann's stamp. The puppets, which could produce the sound “Ma-ma” and “Pa-pa” after pulling out a cord, were initially named after the inventor of the speech mechanism, but were soon also called baptized or baptized .
