Christophe Girard (* 21st July 1967 in Blois , France ) is a former boxer in the light heavyweight and three-time WBO -Titelanwärter. He was best known for his two fights against Dariusz Michalczewski .

Life

Girard was born in Blois, France, where he also fought most of his fights. Blois is his hometown to this day.

Career

Girard made his professional debut on December 2, 1988 against the unknown Alain Leboucher , whom he defeated by breaking off in round six. Girard's opponents were mostly classic opponents who had mostly lost more fights than won.

Only Tom Elton Collins , against whom he fought a fight in 1991, could later become world champion of the WBO association, which he lost to Leeonzer Barber when he defended his title for the first time. The fight took place in Romoratin , France and Girard suffered a knockout loss in the second round unprepared.

After he was able to become French champion against Phillipe Michel , he suffered a second defeat against Eddy Smulders . He fought another fight against the rather unknown Tony Golden , but he was the first opponent of Goldens ever, defeated by TKO. This attracted the attention of the undefeated world champion Dariusz Michalczewski , who held three of the four world associations with the WBO , WBA and IBF and was considered the best fighter in this weight class at the time.

The fighting against Dariusz Michalczewski

The fight took place on June 8, 1997 in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . Michalczewski apparently did not take Girard seriously, who with a match record of 33 fights, 31 wins and 2 defeats left no special impression, which is why he went into the fight with over ten kilos overweight. Girard could not be dangerous to Michalczewski in any way, but was probably the most worthy opponent the world champion had at the time. Girard hit very little, but was able to land good counter hits. Even the broken hand on lap eight didn't change that. Despite everything, the world champion had several, clearer and, above all, harder hits than the challenger. Michalczewski won the fight by unanimous decision and kept his belt.

Michalczewski had apparently learned from it and went into the ring in the second fight on December 13, 1997, significantly fitter. This time he played with Girard with pleasure and brought him down three times in the eighth round. The heavily marked Girard lost the fight by technical knockout (TKO) in round eight and Michalczewski kept his title.

Change to cruiserweight and title fight against Johnny Nelson

After this fight, Girard trained muscle mass and switched to cruiserweight . There he was able to defeat other opponents. After several build-up opponents, he denied a title fight against Johnny Nelson . With 35 wins and a total of 13 defeats, the American was considered the alibi world champion, as he had an unimpressive match record. Girard surprisingly lost the fight by knockout on round four. The surprising defeat left Girard only four more fights before he declared his career over.
