The Christ quarry , also known as the quarry , is a quarry in the Sonnenberg special forest reserve in Baden AG, Switzerland . It's a popular destination for local residents for barbecuing, climbing, and picnicking.

Geographical location

The quarry is located at an altitude of 463  m above sea level. M. in the so-called "Licht Wald Sonnenberg" on the edge of the forest in the Baldegg district of Baden. It is the largest and most diverse of the four quarries in the Sonnenberg and has not been in operation for decades. Occasionally it was still used as a storage facility for municipal construction companies until summer 2020, but is increasingly becoming a local recreational area.

Recreation

The quarry is somewhat hidden, surrounded by forest and can be reached via a short forest path. Since the ground is largely free of vegetation due to the formerly brisk industrial use, in addition to the two large barbecue areas at both ends of the quarry, barbecues are also carried out in many other places. The interesting topography of forest, fallen rocks, grass slopes, steep walls and wetlands offers a varied environment. The western rock face is occasionally used for climbing exercises. A beaten path starts on the left at the back and leads up over the rock face.

The pond at the back of the quarry has overturned due to a lack of inflow and outflow , but it makes a decisive contribution to the uniqueness of the habitat for many animal and plant species.

habitat

The habitat is very diverse due to its topographical features and offers endangered animal and plant species such as the grass-fed mother-of-pearl butterfly , smooth snake and sand lizard many opportunities to develop.
