Christ Church

The Evangelical Lutheran Christ Church , built from 1968 to 1970 by the architect Hanns Hoffmann (1930–2014) from Münster, is a modern church in the Schleswig-Holstein community of Rethwisch . Their tent shape symbolizes that the believers are only guests on earth. For a long time it was one of the few motorway churches in Germany.

history

The parish of Rethwisch has existed since 1901, after a parish meeting in 1893 demanded that the church superiors in Bad Oldesloe be allowed to create a cemetery in order to establish church life in the parish of Rethwisch. Until the construction of the church, the congregation gathered in the congregation house with church hall, which is still in use today, which is now the pastorate. In 1909 the Oldesloer church elders and the community provided 4,500 marks for the church cemetery, which was consecrated on July 8, 1910 with the burial of the first deceased by Pastor Wulf.

After the First World War , the memorial for the fallen was inaugurated on June 5, 1921. The parish had received a piece of land opposite the cemetery from a farmer and erected the memorial there. Today it commemorates the fallen and missing of both world wars.

In 1966 the parish was able to purchase a piece of land next to the cemetery. Plans to build a church in Rethwisch have existed since at least 1924. The drawings for a half-timbered village church still exist, but the building could not be completed during the economic crisis of the 1920s.

After three years of planning and construction from 1967 onwards, the Christ Church, which could seat 140 people, was consecrated by Probst Schwarz in 1970.

Furnishing

The altar was made by the Segeberg wood sculptor Otto Flath . The sculptor Harry Egler designed the altar table, the baptismal font and the cock on the top of the church tower. The four bells, donated by the parishioners , were inaugurated on the first Sunday after Trinity .
