The Chrobry Park

The Bolesław Chrobry Park is a 10.1 hectare park in the center of Gliwice (Gleiwitz) and is the largest park in the city. The Chrobry Park is located south of the Klodnitz in the Politechnika district (Technical University). Until 1945 the park was called Kaiser-Wilhelm-Park (Wilhelmpark) .

History and description

The Kaiser Wilhelm Park was laid out from 1913 to 1915 in the style of a landscape park with a size of 1247 ares and 78 square meters (12.48 hectares). Despite the monarchy, which was abolished shortly thereafter, the park kept its name until 1945. A sports facility with an outdoor pool and stadium was built in the park, where several sports festivals and competitions for the city and the entire province of Upper Silesia were held over the next few decades. The municipal swimming pool opened in 1923. The swimming pool was 125 meters long and 56 meters wide. The lawns were 40,000 square meters. A gondola pond was created next to the outdoor pool, which could be used as an ice rink in the winter months.

In 1928, the Germaniadenkmal from 1874 was moved from Germaniaplatz (today's Plac Piastów) to Wilhelmpark. After 1945 it was dismantled.

Over the years the park has been significantly reduced in size, an ice rink was built in the place of the swimming pool and the gondola pond, and the Arena Gliwice multi-purpose hall was built in the place of the stadium .

The park was renovated and redesigned from 2017 to 2018. The paths were renewed, 37 new trees, new perennials, bulbous plants and bushes were planted, new benches and deck chairs were set up and a new playground was created. A boules pitch, a disc golf course, a roller skating rink, an open-air fitness facility and a fitness trail have also been created.

Currently, around 2000 trees grow in the park, including the following species: maple, birch, beech, ash, oak, alder, spruce, wingnut, ginkgo, hornbeam, hazelnut, judas trees, chestnuts, pines, linden trees, plane trees, robinia, tulip trees, elms, Ancient sequoias, walnuts, willow and hawthorn.
