Chronicle of the priest of Duklja

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The chronicle of the priest of Duklja is probably a chronicle of the history of the Slavs in the Balkans; the time of origin is controversial in research.

The origin of the chronicle is unclear. It describes events up to 1149. The text is only available in Latin, which is a translation from Slavonian, which has also been expanded. A priest of Duklja ( presbyter Diocleas ) is named as the author , whose identity is unknown. Much of the content is historically imprecise.

Due to the complicated history of delivery, it is unclear exactly when the work was created. Some researchers believe that a Latin transmission occurred in the late 12th century. Other researchers assume it was made around 1300, others assume that it was a literary-fictional work that was created even later. In 1601 an Italian translation of the chronicle by Mauro Orbini from Ragusa appeared in Pesaro under the title Il Regno de gli Slaui hoggi corrottamente detti Schiauoni .
