Shoot the Whites (Original title: Fear of a Black Hat ) is an American film directed by Rusty Cundieff from 1993 . In this mockumentary , the life of the fictional gangsta rap group NWH and the macho hip-hop culture are comedically illuminated.

action

For her thesis, the sociologist Nina Blackburn accompanies the Afro-American gangsta rap combo NWH ("Niggaz With Hats", German: Negroes with hats ), consisting of the rappers "Ice Cold" and "Tasty Taste" and DJ "Tone Def" that can always be seen wearing a shrill headgear. For them, hats stand for “freedom and revolution”, since their ancestors had to work as slaves in the blazing sun and, due to the lack of hats, were too tired to resist. Therefore, they (pseudo-) philosophically emphasize how “serious and profound” their lyrics are, even though their songs mostly revolve around big cars, scantily clad women and thick gold chains . The biggest controversy there around the track Kill Whitey ( Shoot the whites ), are discredited by the NWH as racists, although they complain that this "artistic freedom" is. On the other hand, NWH has few problems with the music labels , which are mostly run by whites, to reset their (alleged) political views. Running gags are her beef with another gangsta rap group, the Jam Boys , and that their managers keep dying strange deaths. When Tasty falls in love with a greedy groupie named Cheryl, NWH falls out, so Ice Cold devotes himself to Eurodance , Tasty writes a diss track and Tone Def becomes a hippie . In the end, the members reconcile and win the beef against the Jam Boys. They reveal that their band leader Faizon graduated from high school, which is a deadly sin among "real gangsters". In the end, NWH starts a furious comeback.

reception

The film was u. a. referred to by film critic Roger Ebert as the hip-hop version of This Is Spinal Tap and is full of allusions to this subculture. The English-language film name Fear of a Black Hat is a parody of the album Fear of a Black Planet by Public Enemy , and the band name NWH (Niggaz With Hats) is one of the group NWA (Niggaz Wit Attitudes). Her absurd fascination with firearms is picked up, and a scene in which Ice Cold is arrested alludes to the arrest of Rodney King . The penetrance of the mostly white label owners was also caricatured, with which they pretend to worship the black civil rights activists Malcolm X or Marcus Garvey . Diving in the film a. Pastiches by Salt 'n' Pepa , Queen Latifah and MC Hammer on, and in the NWH music videos u. a. Run DMC , Snoop Dogg , LL Cool J , C + C Music Factory and PM Dawn parodied. Here there was the sex appeal that is quite common in the industry : When filming the video clip of the NWH song Booty Juice , Cundieff (in his role as Ice Cold) was sitting in a bathtub with two female porn actors .

“You can almost feel that the film holds back on sensitive topics and says little about the music itself. But the film is funny, refreshing and full of nasty little pearls (3 out of 4 stars). "

"Scattered charge of many satirical grains of truth (thumbs up)."
