Chumley's

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chumley's was a bar and a historic artists' haunt in the Bedford Street in the district of Greenwich Village of New York City . The restaurant became known as a meeting place for authors from the 1920s, but was still a meeting place for writers and artists from the Beat Generation environment in the 1950s and 60s .

history

The Chumley's is located in the Bedford Street. Since 2000 there has been a sign donated by the Friends of Libraries USA , which indicates that Chumley's has been included in the directory of historically significant places in US literature. There it says about Chumley's:

“Here was a much-mentioned refuge for those poets, novelists and playwrights whose works had a major impact on US literature in the 20th century. They include Willa Cather , EE Cummings , Theodore Dreiser , William Faulkner , Ring Lardner , Edna St. Vincent Millay , Eugene O'Neill , John Dos Passos and John Steinbeck . "

Since then, the covers of numerous books have been seen on the walls of Chumley's which are believed to have been, at least in part, worked on by their authors. For this reason, too, Chumley's is a popular destination for numerous city tours through Greenwich Village.

Current

On April 5, 2007, parts of the apartment block where Chumley's is located collapsed. Since then, the restaurant and some houses in its vicinity have been blocked by the building authorities.
