Church Island ( Irish : Oileán an Teampaill ) is an island in Valentia Harbor in County Kerry in Ireland .
On the island next to Beginish Island there used to be a monastery , about the history of which nothing is known. It was one of the earliest forms of Irish monastery with a wooden oratory and a round hut . Later, a rectangular stone oratory was built using the dry stone technique, comparable to the famous Gallarus Oratory . The round hut and another rectangular building were also made of stone with a thatched roof. In later times the entire complex was framed by a peribolus . A cross stone with an ogam-Inscription was found during the excavation. The church is said to date from AD 750 or later.
