Church of Fear

The Church of Fear (German: Church of Fear ) is a project from the environment of the German stage artist Christoph Schlingensief , who is known for his provocative actions and which critically deals with the spread of fear through authoritarian institutions ( state , church ).

The 50th Biennale in Venice in 2003 , the project was first presented. Since then, the Church of Fear has been exhibited and continued in numerous places. The internet presence is also part of the campaign.

In a typical Schlingensief postmodern way, provocative and parodying the manifestations of Christian churches, the ideologues of a ruling culture are played with and made aware of them.

The English name of the Church of Fear may indicate that the object of criticism lies in the English-speaking world and that it is specifically about criticism of the Bush administration and its anti-terror policy .

Among other things, the Church of Fear celebrates a culture of fear and a commitment to fear. The makers ask for evidence of terrorist acts and fight the terror monopoly of politics. Other activities include spectacularly staged pole seat competitions and performance campaigns such as “striding body” and “last supper”.

In 2005 the Church of Fear erected its own church building on the roof of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and created a contrast to the Catholic World Youth Day in 2005 .
