description

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Meddan is considered to be one of the finest works of Fairlie and is one of the most important late neo-Gothic buildings in Scotland. The church building is at the intersection of St. Meddans Street and Cessnock Road . The masonry consists of cream-colored and embossed sandstone roughly hewn into irregular blocks . A squat-looking three-story tower rises on the northwest-facing front. This has an elongated floor plan and takes up almost the entire width of the nave. The central entrance portal is designed with a round arch with a profiled reveal . Above is a tracery made up of four slender arched windows . Buttresses subdivide the five-axis-wide side facades. The apse protrudes semi-octagonal on the southeast side. The building closes with a slate roof .
