Ciao [ tʃao̯ ] ( German: tschau ) is an originally Italian greeting used in informal communication, which is now also used outside of Italy with the same or a similar meaning. In German, except in part in German-speaking Switzerland , it is only used as a farewell greeting and not as a greeting, while in Italy the greeting is used in both situations.
