Cilander, main workshop in Herisau (1969)

The Cilander is a textile finisher based in Herisau in Canton Appenzell Outer Rhodes . The majority shareholder is the Herisauer Steinegg Foundation.

In 1814 the Meyer und Mittelholzer an der Glatt in Herisau was founded. From 1823 to 1888 the company was called Tribelhorn und Meyer. In 1869 the combination of Scottish and French processes resulted in an excellent finisher . In 1871, a newly built bleaching plant with a searing plant was put into operation at the Isenhammer an der Glatt plant between Gossau and Flawil . In 1873 it was converted to a stock corporation .

In 1888 the company was renamed the Cilander corporation. Together with the Heberlein company in Wattwil, after 1890 Cilander was strong in mercerization , a chemical process that makes fabric stronger and shiny. From 1912, the company developed its own chemical high-quality finishing processes (transparent and opal finishing), which was followed by an upswing. The workforce increased to around 1,000 in the 1920s.

In 1950, Cilander comprised two plants in Herisau and one in Isenhammer. The water from the Glatt was used for refinement, with the result that the Glatt was appropriately soiled.

After 1983 the company was restructured from a pure cotton finisher to a “problem solver” for all textile fibers, the second plant in Herisau was broken off. Investments were made in water protection, so the wastewater is now fed directly into the wastewater treatment plant (ARA).

Today there are around 200 employees.
