Gassing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gassing , Abflämmen or singeing is an industrial refining process for removing the group consisting of yarns and twines and the produced therefrom fabrics , knit fabrics and felts protruding fiber ends (pile). This drying process plays a special role for textile structures made of cellulosic staple fibers, especially cotton, but also for those made of wool and synthetic fibers or fiber blends. Since the singeing of yarns is uneconomical, it is usually only used with special yarns, such as. B. sewing threads.

The textile structures to be processed are brought into contact, for example, with glowing metal bodies, drawn through non-luminous gas flames (Bunsen burner principle) or guided past highly heated ceramic bodies (indirect radiation scorching). The scorching speeds are up to 250 m / min.

This finish gives the product a particularly smooth, fine and clear look, and the goods appear more elegant and easy to grip. In addition, the tendency to get dirty, as well as pilling in fabrics made of synthetic fibers, especially polyester fibers, is reduced. In the case of natural fibers such as cotton , the process of gassing is usually carried out before, and more rarely after, dyeing . In order to avoid damaging synthetic fiber fabrics, it is wetted beforehand and the damp fabric is seared. Polyester fabrics and blended fabrics with more than 50% polyester are usually seared after dyeing, as the fibers at the seared areas would become darker due to the formation of melted knots.
