Cilena is an early ripening, waxy potato variety . It is one of the best known and most popular potato varieties and was at times the market leader in Germany with a 9.3% market share. It was first approved by the Bundessortenamt in 1981 . The tuber is long-oval and starts high on the stem . The flesh color is deep yellow and pure, the eyes are shallow. Cilena is precocious and resistant to nematodes (Ro1).

ground

The soil should be composed of sand, loam and fresh manure and should be well loosened before planting. A distance of about 40 cm between the seedlings promotes growth and a higher yield. The seed potatoes are placed 6 to 8 cm deep in the soil. As soon as the temperatures are clearly positive at night (7 degrees Celsius and more), sowing can take place, usually from the end of March to mid-April. Occasional mineral fertilization is sufficient.

harvest

The cilena is ready for harvest early. As soon as the first flowers have faded, they can be harvested. The still too small potato tubers must then be covered again with earth. Otherwise they will form toxic solanine and become inedible.

Diseases

The genus is particularly susceptible to leaf roll virus and late blight. Leaf roll virus shows up when the top leaves curl up and become brittle. In the event of an infection, control with insecticides is possible, but not always successful. Often the only effective solution is to change location in the following year and not to pull seedlings from infected plant material. Late blight manifests itself as dark discoloration on the leaves. To prevent the pathogen from spreading to the tuber, the herb has to be separated from the cilena around three weeks before harvest.

Cilena in the kitchen

The variety is very tasty. It only reaches its full aroma after a certain storage time. It has a firm consistency when cooked; this makes it particularly suitable for potato pancakes and fried potatoes.
