The former Trocadero cinema

The Cine Trocadero is an event building originally used as a cinema and later as a church in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo .

movie theater

Architect Rafael Ruano was responsible for the building erected in 1941 in Barrio Centro on Avenida 18 de Julio , corner of Yaguarón . From the opening on January 16, 1941, at which the Chaplin film The Great Dictator was shown, until July 2001 the cinema of the same name with 1,241 seats was located here, which had to close for financial reasons. The company's 60-year history ended with the final performance of the Disney production Atlantis .

church

Since 2001, the Cine Trocadero has housed an offshoot of the Brazilian Pentecostal Church Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (Iglesia Universal del Reino de Dios, IURD). The IURD, which was set up as a commercial enterprise by Edir Macedo, invested a total of 4 million US dollars in the purchase of the property together with the Deus é Amor sect , which has connections to organized crime in Brazil, and made high investments elsewhere, which led to the suspicion of money laundering woke up. As a result of the purchase, the money laundering laws in Uruguay are to be tightened.

At the turn of the year 2009/2010 a change of ownership took place and it was speculated that the use as a church could be terminated. However, this does not appear to have been implemented by 2011.
