The Cinema Impero

The Cinema Impero is a cinema in the Eritrean capital Asmara . It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Asmara: a Modernist City of Africa .

The cinema was built in 1937, during the last phase of Italian colonial rule, according to a design by Mario Messina in the Art Deco style. It was named after the Italian Empire which Mussolini proclaimed in May 1936 after the conquest of Ethiopia. The building, including its furnishings, has largely been preserved in its original state.

On 8 July 2017, the has World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO World Heritage application " Asmara: a Modernist City of Africa " adopted and into the World Heritage List inscribed. The Cinema Impero is part of this world heritage.
