Cistercian Studies Quarterly

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cistercian Studies Quarterly (CSQ) is the title of a journal published by the Cistercian Order of Stricter Observance (Trappists) . It was founded in the USA in 1966 as an English-speaking branch of the predominantly French Collectanea Cisterciensia .

After it was separated from the Collectanea and founded in autumn, only two of the usual four editions of the Cistercian Studies Quarterly were published for 1966 . Until 1991 the journal also had the shorter title "Cistercian Studies", which was changed due to name disputes with the Cistercian studies series published by Cistercian Publications. The editorship of the Cistercian Studies Quarterly changed frequently over the years: first, Caldey Abbey in Wales acted as the publisher until 1981 , and since then various Trappist monasteries in the USA have performed this function. In the early days, the journal was primarily an intra-monastic forum, later, and increasingly since the 1990s, university and freelance scientists were added as authors and readers. The thematic framework spans the history of Christian monastic spirituality from its beginnings in the desert to the present day. Furthermore, there are articles on current topics as well as book reviews in the journal.
