Citroën South Africa

Citroën South Africa is a former automobile manufacturer in Pretoria, South Africa and a subsidiary of the Citroën company . The company was founded in November 2009 in Peugeot Citroen South Africa (Pty) Ltd. renamed. Since June 1, 2017, the company has been a subsidiary of VT Holdings Co. Ltd.

prehistory

As early as 1959, Citroën and Atlanta Industries Ltd. or later Stanley Motors Ltd. the assembly of D models in Johannesburg or Natalspruit in what was then the Transvaal province . While, according to one source, this production ended in 1965 after only 1232 units were produced, this year, according to another source, the DS19 model was replaced by the ID19 model. According to a third source, the assembly of the vehicles was done by Praetor Assemblers until 1971 . The DS19M with manual transmission followed in 1967. By 1969, around 7,300 copies had been sold in South Africa, but not all of them had been produced in South Africa.

In 1969, production moved to the former Jeep factory in Pretoria, before being relocated to the Rover factory in Port Elizabeth a year later. The assembled models DS20 and DS20M were also converted to DS21 by some dealers.

In 1972 the company Citroën South Africa was founded. The name is also given with Citroën Sud Afrique . In the same year the DS 20/5 was presented with a manual transmission.

In 1973 the DS23 Pallas and the GS1220 followed with a displacement of 1.2 l and 45 kW.

After taking over Citroën in 1975, Peugeot closed the Port Elizabeth plant and relocated production to Rosslyn Motor Assemblers .

In 1979 Citroën South Africa ceased operations. A total of 30,327 vehicles (including 10,944 D models) were produced.
