CityBike Kaohsiung

CityBike Kaohsiung is a public bike rental system in Kaohsiung . You can rent a bike and return it at any rental station. In order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve air pollution, Kaohsiung City encourages people to use bicycles as a means of short distance transportation. The loan stations are mainly at ( KMRT ) stations (subway), sights, schools and hospitals. The financial support for the bike rental system comes from the Environmental Protection Bureau Kaohsiung City Government. It is estimated that the annual cost is in excess of NT $ 70,000,000 and the annual income is approximately NT $ 8,000,000.

history

A total of three companies took part in the tender in 2008: Tong-Li GmbH (a subsidiary of Uni-President Enterprises Corporation ), Giant Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and TECO Electric & Machinery Co., Ltd. In the end, Tong-Li GmbH was granted the privilege to negotiate with the city government.

On March 1st, 2009 CityBike Kaohsiung was officially opened. Tong-Li GmbH was responsible for the operation. At that time it had 20 rental stations and 1,500 bicycles.

Tong-Li GmbH went out of business on August 18, 2011 because too few people had rented bicycles. The Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit Corporation after (KMRT) took over the business. KMRT was co-founded by Kaohsiung City Government and China Steel , with China Steel donating 5,000 bicycles.

Since December 5, 2011, you can also rent bicycles with the iPASS card .

In May 2013, the number of trips completed so far exceeded the 200 million mark.

The new, blue bikes

In 2015, the old, green bikes were replaced with new, blue bikes. The cost of a new bike was NT $ 6,000, NT $ 1,000 more than its predecessor. The bicycle frames are made of a stronger but lighter aluminum alloy and are therefore 3 kg lighter than their predecessors. In addition, the new bicycles have larger saddle surfaces, height-adjustable seat posts and LED front and LED rear lights that light up while riding.

Registration

Before using the system for the first time, registration is required; the user must log in by telephone with his credit card. Users of the iPASS card can register on the Internet.

rental

You can borrow and return items with an iPASS card or credit card via a rental terminal at the stations. Each parking space has a number and a bike can be released by entering numbers at the rental terminal. If an unlocked bike is not removed from the holder within 90 seconds, the system will automatically cancel the booking.

return

The return can be made at any station in the city, the bike must be connected to the holder. The user then has to hold their card on the sensor on the terminal and the fee is automatically debited.

Users of the iPASS card can receive a discount when changing between KMRT (subway) and CityBike. The transfer must take place within 30 minutes of getting off the KMRT.

  • Young people under the age of 14 are not allowed to use the CityBike, and users aged 14 to 18 need someone to accompany them.
  • Each user can rent a maximum of one bike at a time.
  • When borrowing, you must have more than NT $ 10 credit on the card.

Rental stations

The system has 187 stations with a total of around 1,400 bicycles. The information from the rental stations and CityBike data (availability of bicycles and free bike boxes) can be queried in real time via the Internet.
