The City Ice Boat No. 1 was an American icebreaker and tugboat that was used by the Philadelphia City Council from 1837. The ship is considered to be the world's first icebreaker.

history

The Philadelphia City Council had the ship built in 1837 by the Vandusen and Birelyn shipyard in Philadelphia. The foredeck of the wooden hull, with its spoon-like stern shape, was reinforced with additional iron plates that were tilted to allow the ice to hit the ice. The City Ice Boat No. 1 was equipped with a side paddle wheel drive. The paddle wheels were individually driven and the paddles were reinforced for ice operation.

The City Ice Boat No. 1 operated on the Delaware River until 1917 when it was scrapped.
