City Road is a closed station on the London Underground . It is located in the London Borough of Islington , between today's Old Street and Angel stations on the eastern part of the Northern Line (the so-called City Branch). It was in operation from 1901 to 1922.

history

The station was opened in the course of the commissioning of the line between Moorgate and Angel on November 17, 1901. On August 8, 1922, the entire section between Moorgate and Euston was closed to expand the tunnel profile and to renew the rolling stock of the line. During this work, the platforms were also lengthened in order to adapt them to the volume of traffic on the longer trains. However, since this work was quite costly, the least used City Road station was not rebuilt and remained closed even after the line was reopened on April 20, 1924.

Like many others in London, the station was later used as an air raid shelter. Hardly anything can be seen of the station today. Only a ventilation opening above the former elevator shafts testifies to its earlier use.
