The Cladocorynidae are a family of hydrozoa (Hydrozoa) from the tribe of the cnidarians (Cnidaria) living exclusively in the sea . It is a small family with eight species in three genera .

features

The hydroid polyps form colonies, simple stolons or sparsely branched sticks. The hydrant is club-shaped with a wreath of moniliform or capitate tentacles around the mouth (oral tentacles), further wreaths of moniliform or branched capitate tentacles or irregularly distributed tentacles sit somewhat further from the mouth (aboral tentacles). The nettle cells of the body wall are concentrated in spots or distributed around the base of the tentacles. The gonophores sit individually or on short branched stems in the lower and middle part of the hydrant. The gonophores develop into free medusae or tight spore sacs. The medusa has two opposing perradial tentacles with stalked cnidophores and two non-tentacle-bearing buds. Above are exumbrellar spots with nettle cells (macrobasic eurytela ). The gonads are formed interradially on the manubrium.

Geographical occurrence

The species of the family occur worldwide in tropical to temperate seas. Cladocoryne floccosa Rotch, 1871 was also found in the Mediterranean.
