Clare Island Abbey ( Irish Mainistir Chliara ; St. Bridget's Abbey) is a former Cistercian abbey on the island of Clare Island in County Mayo off the northwest coast of the Republic of Ireland . It is located near the south coast of Clare Island.
history
The monastery was supposedly donated by the O'Malley family in 1224 and served as their burial place. As a subsidiary of Knockmoy Abbey, it belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The monastery was renovated in 1460. According to various sources, the abbey later became a Carmelite convent . It has been a national monument since 1895. Conservation work took place from 1990 to 2000.
Buildings and plant
The abbey has been preserved in a ruinous state. The single-nave, transeptless monastery church with a chancel separated by an arch is known for its wall paintings, which are unusual for a Cistercian monastery.
