Connie Victoria Elizabeth Talbot (born November 20, 2000 in Streetly , Walsall , United Kingdom ) is a British singer who became known in 2007 on the talent show Britain's Got Talent . Among other things, she soon achieved worldwide fame due to her YouTube videos.

Talbot's debut album Over the Rainbow was released in late 2007 . With the new edition of the album, which was released in June 2008, she gained international recognition, especially in Asia and the USA. In addition, the single Three Little Birds was released in June 2008 . She is considered the youngest artist to ever hit the UK charts. In 2008 she toured Singapore , Taiwan , Hong Kong , South Korea and the USA to present her album in a number of live and television appearances. In Jamaica, she recorded a music video for her single Three Little Birds . In 2011 she released her single Sail Away . The album Over the Rainbow was released in November 2008 on the new SanDisk - SlotMusic format. Although initially rated negatively by critics, Talbot is predicted a great future by connoisseurs of the music scene such as Simon Cowell . It is reported about her vocal qualities that she often moves her listeners to tears and has an exceptionally lovely, but also very powerful voice for her age. Although she never had any singing lessons, she is said to be highly professional. Talbot lives with mother Sharon, father Gavin and siblings Molly and Josh in Streetly, Metropolitan County, United Kingdom, and attended a secondary school near Birmingham until September 2018.

Career

Early childhood

Talbot started singing at the age of 18 months. When her grandmother developed breast cancer in 2005, she often sang songs with her from the film The Wizard of Oz, which is where she noticed her extraordinary talent. After her grandmother's death, Talbot consoled her mother by singing. Her parents report in an interview on the talent show Britain's Got Talent that Connie sometimes even sings in her sleep.

Appearance in Britain's Got Talent

At his own request, Talbot took part in the casting for the first season of the talent show Britain's Got Talent in 2007 at the age of six . There she impressed both the jurors and the audience with her a cappella song Over the Rainbow . Judge Amanda Holden burst into tears at her performance . Simon Cowell said: "You were fantastic [...] you hit the tune perfectly". She quickly became known nationwide. In the semifinals she sang the Michael Jackson hit Ben , with which she reached the finals. There she sang Over the Rainbow again but this time with musical accompaniment. Finally she had to give in to tenor Paul Potts . The video for their first appearance was viewed over 150 million times on YouTube (as of November 2015). Although she didn't win the competition, she was supposed to sign a record deal with the record company Sony BMG Music Entertainment . However, after two songs were recorded at Olympic Studios in London, Sony BMG dropped this plan because of the artist's age. Eventually a contract was signed with Rainbow Records , a division of the independent record company Rhythm Riders of producer John Arnison founded especially for Talbot .

The first album: Over The Rainbow

On November 26, 2007, Talbot's debut album Over the Rainbow was released . All the songs on the CD were chosen by herself. Despite the concerns of the producers, she pushed through that the song I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston was also recorded. In order to save the girl the trips to the record studio, all the songs were recorded in her aunt's house. The album reached over 100,000 sales and gold status in three weeks. In total, it was sold over 250,000 times and reached number 35 in the British charts. Nevertheless, it was initially received rather skeptically by the critics. For her young age she is indeed an exceptionally talented singer, but her singing lacks feeling and emotion. Her repertoire consists of "nothing more than pretty little songs". It was only with the second edition of the album that it was able to convince the critics.

Over the Rainbow was reissued on June 30, 2008, with three Christmas carols replaced with newer recordings. This edition of the album was also released in Asia and the USA . Over the Rainbow reached number one in Taiwan and Korea, number five in Hong Kong and number seven in the US. On June 9, 2008, the single Three Little Bird was released . Talbot received a gold record for her album in Great Britain, once platinum in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and twice in Korea. In Taiwan, Over The Rainbow was the top-selling Western album of 2008.

So far, Talbot is the youngest artist to have achieved this success. She has two entries in the Guinness Book of Records , namely as the youngest artist in the charts and as the youngest artist with a gold album.

Christmas album

On November 24, 2008, the second album Connie Talbot's Christmas Album was released . It was released in Asia in early November 2008 and contains a collection of Christmas carols in various styles. A luxury edition called Winter Miracle was released in Taiwan . To avoid school failures and long journeys, all songs were recorded at her home. In contrast to Over The Rainbow , the Christmas album was positively received by the critics from the start. However, because the distributor in England, Pinnacle Entertainment , had to file for bankruptcy shortly after the album was released , the album failed to achieve commercial success.

Holiday Magic Album

In autumn 2009 the album Connie Talbot's Holiday Magic was released . In addition to some songs taken from the previous album, it also contains new Christmas carols. The album was promoted through a promotional tour in the United States, during which an hour-long TV show was created with the songs from the album. Part of the sales proceeds went to the Toys for Tots aid organization . She nominated this as a children's ambassador in 2009, when she was eight, she was the youngest ever to have Toys for Tots .

Beautiful World Album

In November 2012, the album Beautiful World was released on evosound from Hong Kong-based Evolution Ltd. especially for the Asian market . released. Responsible for the production was the Grammy- winning dump truck (Mark Eldridge), who already worked with Sting . A Beautiful World Special Edition has been available from the same label since December 2013 , as is a Japan Edition from Victor Entertainment .

Performances in Germany

Both in 2008 and 2009 Connie Talbot appeared on the ZDF benefit show for the aid organization Ein Herz für Kinder . In December 2008 she thrilled the audience with the Whitney Houston hit I will always love you . The day before, she also took part in the big anniversary concert for children with Rolf Zuckowski . Also in December 2009, she was with the show for a heart for children with and carried along with Sarah Connor , the Ave Maria by Schubert before. In January 2012 she sang Whitney Houston's I will always love you for the RTL recording of the ultimate chart show, which was named the world's most successful hit .

The Young Voices and the African Children's Choir

From 2011 to 2013 she took part as a guest soloist in numerous performances by Young Voices , the world's largest organization of school choir concerts, in several British cities and in Dublin . Together with her, the choir achieved a Guinness world record in March 2012 in the London O2 arena as the largest background choir (with almost 7,000 singers) ever to accompany a soloist in one place.

The African Children's Choir also took part in the Young Voices Tour 2012/2013 with its Choir # 38 from Uganda, which resulted in a friendship and later collaboration with Talbot. In October 2013 there were two joint concerts (this time with Choir # 39, also from Uganda) in their hometown of Walsall and in Bath . During the concert in Walsall said Ray Barnett, president and founder of the ACC, Connie due to their active and financial commitment to the ambassador of the African Children's Choir and announced that a newly built as part of the ACC project school in South Africa Connie Talbot School shall be called .

Personal background

Talbot never had any singing lessons until the end of primary school. She practices singing with a simple karaoke system and sings in the school choir of her elementary school. She wishes to learn to play the piano and loves art as a school subject. She claims to never be nervous when performing. When asked about her motivation, why she likes to sing in front of an audience, she says: "I love singing more than anything else in the world" and: "I want to make people happy." She dedicates the song I will always love you on her grandmother's debut CD: At the end of the recording you can hear her say: "The song is for you, Grandma." Her parents were concerned whether they could give the girl a normal childhood without opposing her desire to sing in front of large audiences. Gigs may therefore be postponed or canceled for your benefit. According to statements from producers and observers, Talbot behaves very professionally on stage, is quick to grasp and rarely has to repeat a rehearsal. According to her mother, her fame does not affect her at all. After the Asian tour, she didn't tell about her performances at school, but about a walk by the sea where she collected pebbles.

Quotes (translated from English)

Connie Talbot recording sound at Olympic Studios
  • Sharon Mawer : “OK. She can sing [well] for a seven-year-old, and most of the notes (if not all) she sings in the correct order and pitch […] but she has no feeling, no emotion, no understanding of what each song is about. It's just pretty little songs [...] a repertoire of the easiest songs of all time ”.
  • Nick Levine : “There is something inherently wrong with giving a seven year old a star rating. Connie Talbot [...] should be happy to sing in a choir, family or occasionally at school meetings [...] The schoolgirl certainly has a lovely, pure voice - which is more powerful than one would expect - but her performance has no nuances and none Depth."
  • Piers Morgen, juror in BGT : "I think you are pound for pound, inch for inch, the best six year old singer in the world"
  • Simon Cowell, juror in BGT and talent scout : “This girl is very special […] I've never felt such a powerful silence in my life as when Connie was singing. It was pure magic. "
  • “Has she [Connie Talbot] ever appeared in public? 'Just once to open the Christmas concert in our local church with Once in Royal David's City . The whole assembly was in tears. "
  • “Were you afraid to appear in front of the Britain's Got Talent judges , Connie? 'No way.' Are you dreading the TV appearances on This Morning with Fern and Phil, and maybe X-Factor , coming up to you to promote your album? 'No.' Do you ever get nervous 'No way'. She says all of this with a smile and unmoved eyes, with some giggles and a roll of the head. "
  • "The thing about Connie is this: she learned to sing with her grandmother, and recordings of Whitney Houston were her grandmother's favorite songs," says Arnison. “She never sang nursery rhymes, only classical songs. As a result, it was very easy to make the recordings with her. "
  • "Arnison says the young singer's management team thought long and hard about including a song as mature as I Will Always Love You in the finished album, but Talbot himself insisted."
  • “She [Sharon Talbot, Connie Talbot's mother] said, I'm someone who is very worried. I never wanted this for her - I never took her to dance or singing lessons. But I could never turn down a Simon Cowell record deal because Connie would say, 'Yeah, yeah!' She would feel like X-Factor's Leona Lewis, who is her great idol alongside Joss Stone. Ms. Talbot, who bought her daughter a karaoke machine because the family couldn't afford singing lessons, also revealed that Connie's talent for singing was discovered tragically - when her grandmother Violet was diagnosed with breast cancer. […] It was her grandmother who first said to me: 'You know, she is really good'. "
  • “Back from choir class, she [Connie Talbot] falls into her rocking chair at her parents' rented house in Streetly near Birmingham. It's been an amazing year and it was easy to get carried away with Connie's success. says her 41 year old dad, Gavin. But from the beginning we stuck to our attitude: she is first and foremost a child, and only secondly an artist. As long as she enjoys what she's doing that's fine, but if she wants to, it stops immediately. For example, she was supposed to be on a nightly TV show in New York last week, but she said she was tired, and that's it - we called the studio and said she wasn't coming. It's great to see how she enjoys her success. But it's still growing. "
  • “Up until now, show business and normal life have been balanced. For example, after Connie's first tour of Asia, they asked at school what she'd been up to during the holidays. She said: We went to the beach and collected pebbles. No mention of limos, five star hotels, or crowds of fans. A break with the trailer in Wales was Connie's fondest memory. "
