Classroom management is a term from the school system. There is currently no uniform German translation of the term, it is often translated as class management, lesson management, lesson management or class organization.

origin

The concept of classroom management was introduced in the United States and is still receiving more attention there than in German-speaking countries. The term was coined by Kounin (1970). The term includes both organizational and personnel management tasks. Leadership of teachers is generally understood to mean the management function. Another definition describes classroom management as "techniques and strategies used by teachers to maintain order, motivate students to learn , and deal with problems."

Explanations

Classroom management is based on a good relationship between the teachers and their students, a good class atmosphere and a preventive class organization that keeps disruptions to a minimum. This creates the conditions for students to feel comfortable and learn well. Walter Doyle (1986) describes the particularities of a classroom setting with the following five dimensions:

  1. Multidimensionality - a singular event can have many consequences have
  2. Simultaneity - a lot happens in a classroom at the same time
  3. Immediacy - what happens in the classroom is fast moving and requires quick addressing
  4. Unpredictability - many things don't always turn out as expected
  5. Historicity - “ habits ” are quickly established and influence the rest of the school year

In order to do justice to these dimensions and to achieve both a good class atmosphere and a good teaching structure in accordance with the goals of classroom management, there are a variety of practical tips. Presence of objectives, motivation, clear rules , positive consequences, good task orientation, encouraged class cohesion and effective handling of classroom disorders can be helpful .
