Claudia (daughter of Appius Claudius Caecus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claudia was a daughter of the Roman politician Appius Claudius Caecus .

Her brother Publius Claudius Pulcher lost as consul in 249 BC. The battle of Drepana . He likely committed suicide only a little later. In the dense crowd of people, Claudia wished in 246 BC. Chr. Loud that her brother should still live and should lose another battle so that the crowd of mob would decrease and they would have more space. The aedile Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus then sentenced them to a heavy fine. The penalty was so considerable that it made up a large part of the funds that had to be raised for the construction of the ( Iuppiter -) Libertas Temple on the Aventine . The legendary Claudia Quinta may have been her sister.
