Claudia Hengst (born September 3, 1969 in Graefelfing ) is a German disabled athlete.

Career

Hengst has been severely disabled since birth and suffers from bilateral hip dislocation . She is a member of the SSG Neptun Germering association. Since she wanted to do competitive sports despite her disability, she specialized in swimming. She trained in the performance groups L 6 and S 10 in several swimming disciplines (chest, back, freestyle and postures), in which she soon performed so well that she was appointed to the German national team for disabled people. She soon took part in various international competitions (European and World Championships, and in the Paralympic Summer Games). She won countless medals in these competitions, making her the German athlete who has achieved the most medals in international competitions. In the Paralympic Games alone, she achieved 13 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze medals in the various swimming disciplines.

Gold medals

  • Paralympics 1988: 100 m back, 100 m chest, 100 m butterfly, 100 m freestyle, 200 m medley, 400 m freestyle
  • Paralympics 1992: 100 m butterfly, 100 m freestyle, 400 m freestyle, 4 × 100 m medley, 50 m freestyle
  • Paralympics 1996: 100 m freestyle, 200 m medley.

5 silver medals and 8 bronze medals were added; the last medal won by Claudia Hengst was a bronze medal won in 2004 in the 200 m individual medal at the Paralympics in Athens.

Claudia Hengst was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf in 1992 for her athletic achievements .

She has been an honorary citizen of the city of Germering since 2001 .
