Claudio Maria Radaelli (born October 29, 1960 in Milan ) is an Italian political scientist whose main focus and teaching is European studies, in particular Europeanization . He is also head of the Center for European Governance, an interdisciplinary research institute that also has the status of a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence.

Life

Radaelli studied social and economic sciences at the Bocconi University in Milan. After completing his doctorate in political science at the European University Institute in Florence, he worked at the Institute for Social Research in Milan, the State University of Milan and the Robert Schuman Center for Advanced Studies of the European University Institute in Florence. In addition, Radaelli regularly used his scientific findings in the field of policy advice . Among other things, he was rapporteur for the Task Force “The Future EU Tax System” of the Center for European Policy Studies, scientific advisor to the Italian government on the subject of “Legal Impact Assessment” and research director of the think tank Prospecta LTD in Milan. In 2001, Radaelli was also a member of an advisory group set up by the European Commission which contributed to the “Governance” White Paper on the subject of “Democratizing Expertise”. Before joining Exeter University , he was Professor of Public Policy at Bradford University and Director of the Center for European Studies there.

Radaelli is co-editor of the European Journal of Political Research, one of the most highly regarded magazines in the field.

Research priorities

Radaelli is particularly concerned with the relatively young research field of Europeanization . His important contribution to Europeanization research consists on the one hand in developing one of the most far-reaching concepts in this area to date. Building on his own definition of Europeanization, he not only designed a clear analytical framework for the empirical investigation of Europeanization, but also combined different theoretical approaches from Europeanization research into one approach.

Radaelli sees Europeanization as a process of changing the logic of national political action. His concept includes not only the emergence of European politics, but also its repercussions on the nation states.
