The European University Institute ( EHI ; English: European University Institute , EUI ; Italian: Istituto Universitario Europeo , IUE) is a research institution in Florence and Fiesole . It is dedicated to the training of doctoral and master’s students (in particular the Master of Laws is designed as a separate program) and research in economics, history, law, political and social sciences.

history

After plans for a European university from the early days of the European Community had been rejected, the education ministers of the EC member states agreed in 1971 to create a European university institute instead of a full university . On April 19, 1972, all six of the then EC member states signed a convention establishing the University Institute in Florence. Teaching and research began in 1976. All EU member states except Croatia , the Czech Republic , Hungary , Lithuania and Slovakia are now member states of the convention.

Course offer

The university offers a four-year Ph.D. in the subjects of law , history ("History and Civilization"), economics, and political and social sciences. Program. There is also a one-year master’s degree program in law (comparative law, European and international law). European issues are sometimes given a special place in the programs. Doctoral students and postdocs from EU countries have access to a large number of scholarships. The teachers are predominantly recruited from (all over) Europe. Despite its location on a hill just outside Florence in the Italian region of Tuscany , the university institute is an international organization independent of the state and therefore not to be regarded as an Italian university.

construction

The university institute consists of the following faculties:

  • Economics
  • History and civilization
  • Right as well
  • Political and Social Sciences.

There is also the interdisciplinary Robert Schuman Center and a School of Transnational Governance. Professor Renaud Dehousse holds the office of President today.

Historical Archives of the European Union, Florence

The Historical Archive of the European Union (HAEU) secures the archives of the European institutions on a permanent basis and makes them usable according to the 30 year period applicable in Europe. The HAEU was established in accordance with Decision No. 359/83 of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), Regulation No. 354/83 issued by Euratom and the European Economic Community, and Regulation No. 1700/2003 of the Council of Ministers of the European Communities and Founded by Euratom with the task of making the files of these institutions publicly accessible. An agreement concluded in 1984 between the Commission of the European Communities and the European University Institute led to the establishment of the HAEU, which is administered by the EHI. It opened its doors in 1986.

The tasks of the Historical Archives of the European Union also include the collection of documents from personalities, movements and international organizations that have played an important role in the European integration process. It holds more than 150 deposits, has a specialist collection of books and printed literature and has an extensive collection of interviews with contemporary witnesses ('oral history'). The HAEU promotes research on the history of the European Union and the integration process and supports transparency and public relations work by the European institutions.
