Ulrich Becker (legal scholar)

Ulrich Becker (born July 21, 1960 in Sande / Friesland) is a German legal scholar who primarily deals with social law , public law and European law.

Life

Becker grew up in Bergisch Gladbach . He studied law at the University of Würzburg and at the European University Institute in Florence. He passed his first state examination in law in 1984 and his second state examination in 1989. In the same year he received his doctorate. iur. utr. at the University of Würzburg. He then obtained a diploma (LL.M.) in comparative European and international legal studies from the European University Institute in Florence in 1991. Becker then received a grant from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation ; In 1994 he completed his habilitation at the University of Würzburg. Subsequently, he held professorial positions at the universities of Regensburg and Greifswald until 1996 .

In 1996 he accepted a position at the University of Regensburg. From April 1996 he was a full professor and holder of the chair for “Public Law, German and European Social Law”. At the turn of 1999/2000 Becker was an “Emile Noël Fellow” at Harvard Law School . Since April 2002 he has been a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Social Law (now the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy ). In October 2002 he was appointed honorary professor at the LMU Munich . Becker is a member of the Academia Europaea .

Becker has written and edited numerous essays and books, especially on problems of German and European social law.
