Gunther Teubner (born April 30, 1944 in Herrnhut ) is a German legal scholar .

Life

Teubner studied from 1963 to 1967 at the University of Göttingen and the University of Tübingen . He was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . In 1970 he received his doctorate from the University of Tübingen with a thesis on the interpretation of general legal clauses. In 1971 he passed the assessor exam . From 1972 to 1974 he did a research stay in the USA, where he obtained his master's degree (law and society) from the University of Berkeley .

In 1977 he completed his habilitation at the University of Tübingen on the subject of organizational democracy and association constitution. Legal models for politically relevant associations . In the same year he received a professorship at the University of Bremen .

In 1981 Teubner moved to the European University Institute in Florence . He taught here until 1993.

In 1993 Teubner took over a professorship for comparative law and legal theory named after Otto Kahn-Freund at the London School of Economics and Political Science .

As a result, Teubner moved to the Faculty of Law at the University of Frankfurt in 1998 , where he retired in 2009 . There he was also Principal Investigator of the Frankfurt Cluster of Excellence The Formation of Normative Orders . He also taught at the International University College in Turin.

Teubner provided in particular for the systems theory of law a . a. important contributions in dealing with the considerations of Niklas Luhmann .

Awards

Teubner's work has received several awards, including the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize in 2000 and a fellowship at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in 2007 . He has received several honorary doctorates and visiting professorships. In 1989 Teubner became a founding member of the Academia Europaea . In 2013 he was accepted into the British Academy .
