The yellow -breasted wood warbler ( Icteria virens ), also known as the ventriloquist wood warbler and flute blackbird , is a small, insectivorous bird and the only species in the genus Icteria . According to the new system of the IOU (2018), the genus is listed in its own family Icteriidae .
features
With a body length of about 19 centimeters and a wingspan of about 25 centimeters, the yellow-breasted warbler was the largest species within the wood warbler family. The plumage is olive green to olive brown on the top. They wear white plumage on the stomach area and yellow on the chest and throat area. The dark brown eyes are bordered with crescent-shaped white circles above and below the eye. A white stripe extends over the eye to the front of the head. They have an elongated white spot on their cheek.
Spread and threat
Yellow-breasted warbler are widespread songbirds in North America . The distribution area extends during the breeding season from the south in Canada to central Mexico. Over the winter they move to Mexico and Central America . Due to the loss of their habitats, the Yellow-breasted Warbler is threatened in their populations. Another threat is the brown-headed cowbird ( Molothrus ater ), which as a brood parasite lays its eggs in the nests of the yellow-breasted warbler.
Subspecies
Three subspecies of the species are known so far.
- Icteria virens auricollis ( Deppe , 1830) - This subspecies is found in southwestern Canada and the western United States .
- Icteria virens tropicalis Van Rossem , 1939 - This subspecies is common in northwestern Mexico .
- Icteria virens virens ( Linnaeus , 1758) - The nominate form occurs in southeastern Canada via the east of the United States in northeastern Mexico.
The taxon Icteria virens danotia ( Oberholser , 1974) and Icteria virens longicauda ( Lawrence , 1853) are generally considered synonyms.
