Johannes Droste (1925)

Johannes Droste (born May 28, 1886 in Grave ; † September 16, 1963 in Leiden ) was a Dutch mathematician and theoretical physicist. He was a professor at Leiden University .

Droste received his doctorate under Hendrik Antoon Lorentz at the University of Leiden in 1916 ( Het zwaartekrachtsveld van een of meer lichamen volgens de theorie van Einstein , The gravitational field of one or more bodies according to Einstein's theory) He defended his dissertation in Leiden in December 1916.

As a result of his dissertation in 1916, he found the Schwarzschild solution to the general theory of relativity independently of Karl Schwarzschild . He published four months after Schwarzschild (1917). He had previously examined the problem in the Einstein-Grossmann theory and published it in 1915 and in 1916 in the final form of Einstein's theory. Its derivation was easier than with Schwarzschild and used the choice of coordinates most commonly used today. Einstein expressed his admiration for the solution in a letter to Ehrenfest.

Droste also treated the n-body problem for slowly moving bodies and published about it in part with Lorentz (1917). However, since this work, unlike his work at the Royal Academy of Sciences, was only published in Dutch in 1916, it received less attention and Einstein, Leopold Infeld and Banesh Hoffmann found many of the results new in their treatment of the problem in the 1930s.

At that time, Droste was part of a group in Leiden that was the first to actively take up general relativity abroad. Another physicist was Willem de Sitter and the Leiden professors Paul Ehrenfest and Lorentz were in correspondence with Einstein (Ehrenfest was even a close friend).

His doctoral students include Adriaan Zaanen and Antonie Monna .
