Clay (industrial plasticine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clay is a material that is used in model making . Design studios in the automotive sector in particular use this special version of the well-known plasticine . But character designers, industrial designers, artists and architects also use this material for their work.

Composition and use

In Clay is a modeling clay on wax base . Most types of clay use sulfur as a filler . Almost all types of clay are light brown in color, which makes it easier to “read” a shape - that is, to assess it by the designer and modeller. Before a new car model comes onto the market, there is a long process of form-finding. In addition to sketches and computer models, models of the vehicle are still made today. Precise assessment of proportions and shapes is only possible on the model. The design can also be further developed on the model. Clay models are usually made on a 1: 1 or 1: 4 scale. A model usually consists of a wooden or metal frame on which polyurethane panels are attached. The clay is then applied to this.

Manufacturer

There are only a few manufacturers who produce clay. The world's largest producer is Staedtler in Germany ( Marsclay brand ), the oldest Chavant in America. The third global manufacturer was Franz Kolb GmbH, the company of the plasticine inventor Franz Kolb . This has merged into the Staedtler company since January 1st, 2011. The products Superclay and TecClay are now available from Staedtler.
