The Staedtler Mars GmbH & Co. KG (proper spelling STAEDTLER), based in Nuremberg is one of the oldest industrial companies and one of the oldest manufacturers of writing instruments in Germany. The company employs around 2,200 people and is Europe's largest manufacturer of pencils and colored pencils. Around 80 percent of the writing instruments are manufactured in Nuremberg. In 1834 the crayon based on oil chalk developed by Johann Sebastian Staedtler was brought onto the market for the first time worldwide.

history

The company was founded on October 3rd, 1835 by Johann Sebastian Staedtler as a factory for the production of pencils . His ancestor Friedrich Staedtler was already active as a “ lead pencil maker” and was mentioned in a document in 1662 in the books of the city of Nuremberg. Johann Sebastian Staedtler himself was able to gain knowledge in the manual production of pencils in his father's workshop, the pencil maker Paulus Staedtler, and successfully transfer it to industrial production.

By 1840 the company was already producing over 50 different types of pencil and, from 1856, round and hexagonal cedar pencils in 48 colors each. In 1866 the annual production of over two million pens is reached.

In 1895 the Minerva brand was registered with the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin, the Mars brand in 1900, the Noris brand in 1901 , under which Staedtler's school pencils are marketed to this day.

Staedtler expanded in the twenties, with the establishment of branches in New York / USA 1922, Osaka / Japan 1926 and London / UK 1929. In 1937 the product range was expanded to include mechanical writing implements, and the company was renamed Mars Pencil and Fountain Pen Factory. In 1949 Staedtler began manufacturing ballpoint pens . In 1978, the competitor Eberhard Faber was taken over (now owned by Faber-Castell again ). Staedtler sells its own series of ink pens under the brand name Marsmatic , which are mainly used for technical drawing .

The Staedtler Foundation is a public foundation under civil law. It holds all the shares in the Staedtler Group. It promotes scientific research at domestic universities - especially the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg - and technical colleges as well as cultural institutions. There are z. B. annual doctoral prizes awarded and cultural projects promoted. These include B. the Literaturhaus Nürnberg e. V. or projects of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg.

Staedtler has 10 production sites worldwide, four of which are in the EU, 24 sales offices and sells its products in over 150 countries.

Inventions

Johann Sebastian Staedtler is the inventor of the crayon based on oil crayons . On February 26, 1834, in the “Korrespondenten von und für Deutschland” (Correspondents from and for Germany), he announced to the “esteemed traders as well as the artists” that “I finally succeeded in doing a lot of research to produce red pencils which, in terms of their quality, all the earlier types Far surpass, let yourself be sharpened to the finest possible using pencils, write superbly, keep the color unchanged and always remain of the same hardness. Staedtler Lumocolor 313 (1980–1985)

On April 30, 1954, the trademark “Lumocolor” was registered. In 1967 Staedtler was the first manufacturer to present a fiber-tip pen for daylight projection with water-soluble special ink in eight bright colors, the Staedtler Lumocolor. At the end of the 1960s Staedtler developed the Lumocolor permanent fiber-tip pen with waterproof ink for overhead projection. Starting in 1974, the Lumocolor range was supplemented with the "overhead wide-type pens" with chisel tips. From the late 1970s onwards, Staedtler had developed five different tips and an extensive range of foils. The Staedtler Box - an innovative and now patented multifunctional pack - was designed for Lumocolor in 1999 and launched on the market in 2000. Up to the anniversary year 2004, a. the Staedtler Lumocolor permanently special for many special applications such as B. for writing and marking on Teflon or nano-technically treated surfaces and the Staedtler Lumocolor permanent compact presented.

In 2013 Staedtler presented its world first "photo painting set" at the Paperworld trade fair . Sales started in May 2013 with the integration of the coloring book function in hotel apps.
