Clayton Tarleton

Clayton Tarleton ( September 5, 1762 , † 1797 ) was a British businessman and politician.

Life

Clayton Tarleton was one of the sons of the wealthy merchant, shipowner and slave trader John Tarleton of Liverpool . His five siblings include Banastre and John Tarleton .

Like his father, Clayton Tarleton himself became a merchant. In the late 1780s and early 1790s he was involved in the Tarleton & Backhouse company with his brothers Thomas and John Tarleton and Daniel Backhouse . In 1791 he founded the Tarleton & Rigg company together with William Rigg , but left the company when he was elected mayor. Tarleton was a councilor on Liverpool City Council and served as mayor of the city from 1792 to 1793. On April 25, 1795 he married Jemima Robinson († December 4, 1796). The marriage remained childless.
