Cleonymia (Serryvania) yvanii is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The color of the fore wings varies greatly. There are ocher-colored specimens and those with a gray-brown tint. The midfield is usually a bit darkened. Flaws stand out only indistinctly or are absent. The outer and inner transverse lines are dark brown to black and run in large arcs or waves. With a wingspan of 18 to 25 millimeters, the adults are one of the smaller owl butterfly species. The hind wings are colored gray-brown with almost no drawing. The antennae of the males are sawtooth-like. The females have a slightly longer abdomen with mostly protruding laying tubes .

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are reddish in color and show broad whitish side ridges and side stripes as well as black spiracles .

Similar species

The color of the somewhat larger species Cleonymia diffluens , which occurs in the south of Spain and north-west Africa, tends more towards black-brown tones and indistinct drawing elements .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of Cleonymia yvanii includes parts of Portugal , north-east Spain , southern France and part of north-east Italy . The species occurs mainly on stony southern slopes and dry grasslands .

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation from late April to mid-July. At night they are very fond of visiting artificial light sources . The caterpillars live from late summer and feed on sun rose species ( Helianthemum ). The species overwinters as a pupa.

Taxonomy

Since Cleonymia yvanii varies greatly in size and color, there has been some confusion in the past when determining the species, as different and incorrect geographical assignments with incorrect subspecies and shape names have been used by some authors. Thus C. diffluens times more of a color or a southwestern subspecies of C. yvanii considered now but will be managed as two distinct species.
