Clifton [ ˈklɪftən ] was a town in the Canadian province of Ontario , which in 1903 became part of the newly founded city of Niagara Falls . The village was in close proximity to Niagara Falls .

history

The origins of Clifton town go back to 1782. In that year, the British settler Phillip Bender, who had fled American territory, and his family, as a loyalist, acquired the area on which the town of Clifton was later developed. In 1832 a British Army officer, Captain Ogden Creighton, took over the area. Creighton had streets and buildings built and named this first settlement after Clifton in his British homeland. On the road leading to the ferry over the Niagara River , the Ferry Road , Creighton built his house on a small rise with a view of the waterfalls. The place Clifton was created in the area around the Ferry Road , which was now called Clifton Hill . To this day, Clifton Hill is a major street in the center of Niagara Falls.
