Climate Data Operators (CDO) is a command line program widely used in climate research for the analysis and processing of climate and other grid-based data. It is being developed by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and is part of the European Network for Earth System Modeling. It can be compiled and executed on all POSIX compatible operating systems. A binary 32bit Windows version is also available.

history

The first published version (0.6.0) was made available in 2003 by Uwe Schulzweida. Before that, many researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology had worked with scripts they had written themselves, for example to project input data from grid-based data onto the grid of weather models or to map model results onto geographical coordinates. Instead, the CDO allow them to use ready-made, uniform, reliable software. Since then, there have been constant improvements, bug fixes, and support for more data formats. Updates are published approximately four times a year.
