Clunia (Feldkirch)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Clunia was a Roman settlement near Feldkirch in Vorarlberg , Austria. The buildings still preserved in their foundations were located at a street station that is already recorded on the Tabula Peutingeriana not far from Brigantium , today's Bregenz .

The settlement of Clunia has always been suspected in the Feldkirch, Rankweil and Göfis area , but its existence could not be proven at first. It was not until the planned reallocation of large agricultural areas into commercial and mixed areas that archaeologists undertook geophysical prospecting in 1998/99 , which led to the discovery of numerous building structures hidden in the earth. From 2006 onwards, archaeological excavations uncovered several foundation walls bound with lime mortar. In the meantime, the extensive protection of the facility in public ownership has been initiated.
