Cluster (creative writing)

Cluster on the topic of clustering

The cluster method (also known as clustering ) is a method of creative writing developed by Gabriele L. Rico . In doing so, chains of associations are noted that start from a central word. Clustering is a brainstorming process.

Basics

As with a mind map , one assumes that creative impulses arise from the interaction of figurative and conceptual thinking. This is explained by the way the brain works, according to which the left half is responsible for conceptual thinking, the right half for visual thinking. The aim of the method is to use both hemispheres for the writing process.

Basic rules

  1. The cluster begins with the cluster core: a single word or phrase is written down in the middle of a sheet and a circle is drawn around this beginning.
  2. Are now starting from the core associations noted. Each association is again circled and connected to the previous association by a line.
  3. A new chain of associations starts again with the cluster core.
  4. Every association is noted. A censorship does not take place.

In contrast to linear notes, after a certain period of time, the loose chains of associations emerge and the first ideas for connections emerge. This is the transition to the so-called test network (web of trial). In this phase the associations are directed in a certain direction: Something like a text on trial is created. From this flashing idea, a writing impulse emerges at some point, which is immediately implemented.

Incidentally, clustering can also be used as an idea generation technique in a group. A core word is written on a flipchart, and the individual participants now form chains of associations together, i.e. that is, they are stimulated by the words of others. One person quickly writes down - according to the structure of a cluster - what the participants are calling. This brings together a lot of ideas that can be used for further work.
