Coast Guard Island (until 1982: Government Island , German " Government Island ") is a small inhabited island on the west coast of the United States in the American state of California . It is located between the towns of Alameda and Oakland in the San Francisco Bay Embarcadero Cove- estuary , about 300 meters away from the mainland. The 68 acre island is connected to Oakland by a bridge to the south.

The island has been used by the United States Coast Guard since 1926 , today almost exclusively by them. Access is therefore forbidden to the public. There are several military and public (civil) administration offices on the island, such as the Pacific Commander Station (US Coast Guard District Eleven), training facilities and accommodation for the Coast Guard, two military hospitals, a seaport for sea-going Coast Guard ships and the San Francisco Marine Safety Office. Coast Guard Island is currently the home port of the ships ( High Endurance Cutter ) USCGC Boutwell (WHEC-719), USCGC Morgenthau (WHEC-722) and USCGC Sherman (WHEC-720).
