Cocoliztli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cocoliztli was a hemorrhagic fever that occurred in Mexico . The affected people were bleeding profusely from their mouth and nose. The epidemics of 1545 and 1576, preceded by a smallpox epidemic in 1519-1520, cost millions of lives. The population did not regenerate for several centuries. The pathogen is unclear. A team of researchers published an article in Nature in 2018 in which Salmonella Typhimurium was identified as the likely culprit.
