The Kokytos ( modern Greek Κοκύτος, ancient Greek Κώκυτος ( m. Sg. )) Is a river in the Greek region of Epirus , which rises in the mountains of Paramythia ( Ori Paramythias ) and flows south through the valley of Paramythia. At the intersection between the southern end of the Paramythia Valley and the area of the Acherousia Lake , which is now silted up, the Cocytus flows into the Acheron River .
In Greek mythology , the Kokytos (river of wailing ) is a branch of the Styx and flows into the Acheron . When the deceased drink from the river, they recognize that they have lost their life in the upper world and complain accordingly. In Dante's Divine Comedy , the ice lake Cocytus is the ninth and deepest circle of hell.
